A Golden Age of Illustration: Vintage Holiday Postcards

Carroll was an accomplished amateur photographer, especially of children. Alice Liddell and her sisters often sat for him in the late 1850s and early 1860s. He photographed many of his young friends in costume and posed them in a role, as in this hand-tinted portrait of Alice as a street urchin. In 1864, Mrs. Liddell forbade any further outings with Carroll. <br><br><br />

"Filled with the Most Precious Jewels": The Arents Doll's Casket

ShÅchan, Princess, and Squirrel [Volume 2, front cover]. The original daily installments of <i>The Adventures of ShÅchan</i> were drawn and printed in black and white. The authors divided each story into units of four framed pictures. Kabashima showed his gift for atmospheric color the following year when the publisher, Asahi Shinbunsha, began to publish <i>The Adventures</i> in book form. <br><br><hr><br />
