Christianity A Luxury Renaissance Manuscript

Lectionary with Sequences, in Latin. Manuscript on vellum. Bartolomeo Sanvito, scribe. Antonio Maria da Villafora and another Paduan master, illuminators. Padua, ca. 1501–1511. NYPL, Spencer Collection.

This luxury manuscript, one of two volumes divided into Epistles and the Gospels, contains major readings for the ecclesiastical year. It was made for the monastery of San Giovanni di Verdara in Padua, which largely survives, along with its famous library spaces and its important frescos. Its manuscripts and printed books were dispersed in the 18th century.

The superb scribal hand and the glorious illuminations can be confidently assigned respectively to the most important scribe and illuminator in Padua during the first decade of the 16th century.
