Christianity The Christian Bible

Bible, in Latin. Cambrai, ca. 1280. NYPL, Manuscripts and Archives Division.

Most Latin Bibles produced in France during this period were small volumes, so this is a fairly rare survival of a 13th-century "lectern" Bible, intended for use in public settings. The text is very carefully set out using a hierarchy of painted initials and penwork.
