Joan La Barbara's career as a composer / performer / soundartist explores the human voice as a multi-faceted instrument expanding traditional boundaries, creating works for multiple voices, chamber ensembles, music theater, orchestra and interactive technology, developing a unique vocabulary of experimental and extended vocal techniques: multiphonics, circular singing, ululation and glottal clicks that have become her "signature sounds," garnering awards in the U.S. and Europe including the 2008 Letter of Distinction from the American Music Center for her significant contributions to new American music; the 2004 Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition, the prestigious DAAD Artist-in-Residency in Berlin and seven National Endowment for the Arts fellowships: Music Composition, Opera / Music Theatre, Inter-Arts, Recording (two), Solo Recitalist and Visual Arts.

NYPL Video: Margaret Leng Tan Prepares the Piano for "Bacchanale"

Description:

Pianist Margaret Leng Tan explains how she prepares a piano, by inserting bolts and other objects into the strings, to play John Cage's "Bacchanale." Tan is a talented and visionary pianist whose work sidesteps perceived artificial boundaries within the usual concert experience, creating a new level of communication with listeners. Embracing aspects of theater, choreography, performance, and even props, Tan has brought to the avant-garde a measure of showmanship tempered with a disciplinary rigor inherited from her mentor, John Cage. Born in Singapore, Tan was the first woman to earn a doctorate from Juilliard. Her desire to explore the crosscurrents between Asian music and that of the West led her to John Cage, sparking an active collaboration that lasted from 1981 until his death in 1992.
