Manuscript Excerpt: Bacchanale

This is Cage's first work for prepared piano. Lack of stage space prohibited Cage from using the percussion ensemble originally conceived for this work. His solution was to create a piano that sounded like a group of percussion instruments, accomplished by inserting objects between the piano's stings.

Directions for Preparing a Piano

Cage created this document to instruct performers of "Sonatas and Interludes." Such a precise description was necessary for the performer because the technique of preparing a piano was still a novelty.

Cage's Reimbursement Receipts

Cage submitted a request, likely unsolicited, to The League of Composers to be reimbursed for costs incurred while composing "Sonatas & Interludes." Included here is the cover sheet from one of his expense reports; one receipt, from a hardware store, is for five large bolts, costing 95 cents.
