Ringin' in the 1940 Season
"'Happy New Year,' says the New York World's Fair to all the world" — so heralded the Fair’s Director of Publicity, Leo Casey.
Promotion of the new theme, “For Peace and Freedom,” and the “Hello Folks” slogan extolling patriotism and populism reached fever pitch on May 11, 1940, the opening day of the revamped second season of the Fair.
"Here they come!" exclaimed Casey, describing the crowds and pointing out the "Hello Folks" placards "which greeted sightseers all over the fairgrounds, sounding the super-county fair note which the Fair is stressing this year. The gates were opened at 9:45 a.m., fifteen minutes ahead of schedule because of the rush of early comers."
