Human imagination is given no more powerful expression than through the arts, celebrating who we were, are, and will become … and the connections are forged across virtually all cultural and societal divides.

Small doodle from the 50 year old NYPL guest book. Something about the guest book it really made me think about all the people that come to the library seeking knowledge or maybe a good read. Books are the most amazing things and I can only hope that they will be cherished forever.

The 100 year was the first time I had ever been to the NYPL. And what better way to commemorate it, then by signing the 100 yr guest book.

From Thomas Jefferson’s handwritten copy of the Declaration of Independence to a Ku Klux Klan robe, the Library’s collections guarantee that we cannot retreat from the realities — noble and ignoble — of the past.

This was a lusciously photographed beautiful movie. "Set in nineteenth-century New Orleans, the story depicts the gens de couleur libre, or the Free People of Colour, a dazzling yet damned class caught between the world of white privilege and black oppression."--Internet Movie Database.

A library is a treasure trove of beauty; a compendium of ideas, dreams, stories, commentary, and expression, ensuring that the thoughts of a person can be shared even after the author has shuffled off this mortal coil. From the medieval scribe carefully writing with quill on parchment to the latest best-selling author typing away on his iPad, every practitioner of the literary arts owes their immortality to the library's perpetual conservatorship.

Books will never be extinct. From handwritten and illuminated manuscripts to the latest e-reader version of a popular novel, words and images tell our stories; whether fictional or not, whether sacred or secular, mankind has an indelible need to express themselves so that their thoughts and ideas will live beyond themselves. Whatever form a book takes there is always beauty.

I went to the library today for inspiration. I came upon the exhibit by surprise and I know it will be one of my most memorable experiances as an artist living in New York. I drew this in my sketchbook before leaving the library.
