Creativity

Human imagination is given no more powerful expression than through the arts, celebrating who we were, are, and will become … and the connections are forged across virtually all cultural and societal divides.

Society

From Thomas Jefferson’s handwritten copy of the Declaration of Independence to a Ku Klux Klan robe, the Library’s collections guarantee that we cannot retreat from the realities — noble and ignoble — of the past.

Observation

Observations of the natural world raise the questions: What do we see? What do we actually know?

I spent my time as a child in the Children's Room of the Donnell Library where my love for reading began. My time at the library brought me such fond memories that it affected my career path in life and I now have a Library Science degree.

The history of NYPL stamps and circulation slips is often chronicled in books digitized by Google Books. This collage of different digital library artifacts was created by Krissy Wilson, who collected them in her blog project, The Art of Google Books (http://theartofgooglebooks.tumblr.com/tagged/New-York-Public-Library).

The inward gaze in the pursuit of spiritual meaning is a hallmark of civilization.

This was the most inspiring book we (my 11yo son and I) read this year.
NYPL is our "Room for Learning". We homeschool, or "lifeschool" as we call it, and our years of education have been immensely enriched by the collections of NYPL, the public programs, the classes and the wonderful exhibitions.
It was so beautiful to gaze upon the gorgeous Audobon folio last week while visiting the Centennial exhibition for our third time. We felt very privileged and grateful for such an opportunity.
"Sing on, sing on, you gray-brown bird,
Sing from the swamps, the recesses, pour your chant from the bushes,
Limitless out of the dusk, out of the cedars and pines." Thanks NYPL!

Thanks to my librarian, she inspired me to keep reading.
