Contemplation

The inward gaze in the pursuit of spiritual meaning is a hallmark of civilization.

This is my absolute favorite series to read. I sit down on a bench on a warm summer day or by the roasting fireplace in the winter, curl up, and read for eternity.

From Thomas Jefferson’s handwritten copy of the Declaration of Independence to a Ku Klux Klan robe, the Library’s collections guarantee that we cannot retreat from the realities — noble and ignoble — of the past.

After walking through the amazing Centennial exhibition, we were taken with inspiration and appreciation. We were in awe of the work that had been before us, and exhilarated for the future of our generation. Ithaca College Park Scholars, Class of 2013.

New Zealand is a little obsessed with the Rugby World Cup at present, so I thought I would add this image to the quilt as a soft, gentle, more gentlemanly portrayal of the game by way of acknowledgement. The US team did compete in the Cup this time, but alas did not make it past pool play.

I was assigned this book to read in the sixth grade. I am now 28, an avid reader, and I can still tell you the entire plot including quotes from something I read once, over a decade ago. My first place of employment at 15 was the Richmond Town Library in Staten Island. I can honestly say without a doubt, reading has made me the person I am today. Thank you NYPL.

Creativity

Human imagination is given no more powerful expression than through the arts, celebrating who we were, are, and will become … and the connections are forged across virtually all cultural and societal divides.

Frida Kahlo - truly an inspiration. I learnt so much about this great artist from books borrowed from the library - not NYPL as I don't unfortunately live in New York! Incredible life, ended too soon. Books capture my imagination and help me learn about incredible people and places.

I chose this picture because I was really touched by the story of the Titanic. I've seen the movie a billion times, watched many documentaries on it, and even did a research project on it.

Observation

Observations of the natural world raise the questions: What do we see? What do we actually know?

This photo of Malcolm x (as said by description not seen on photo) looks insanely amazing. Whoever had taken this photo mus have had true skill in photography and if this is edited or not this is just an amazing picture to look at. The shading, the light, the background, and his praying pose, all just looks perfect. When looking at this in the exhibition i could not take my eyes off of it, because this photo just looks so unique and i have never seen photo like this before in my entire life.
